Electro-Wind Ltd is delighted to announce the design, manufacture, and delivery of a custom-built 500kVA 3PH 415V/690V transformer for one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects — the construction of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.

Working in partnership with leading electrical wholesaler, Electro-Wind was entrusted with supplying a highly robust IP55-rated transformer, specifically engineered for external environments and designed for installation on a raised platform. The transformer now plays a crucial role in providing temporary power to the Unit 2 reactor polar crane during the commissioning phase.

One of the project’s greatest challenges was achieving the stringent IP55 protection rating while keeping the size and weight of the unit to a minimum. Electro-Wind’s engineering team overcame this by incorporating forced air cooling, ensuring complete compliance with environmental standards while maintaining exceptional performance and efficiency.

This specialist transformer is currently powering one of the largest land-based cranes in the world, a vital asset to the development of Hinkley Point C. Despite the project’s time-sensitive nature, Electro-Wind successfully delivered the unit within a demanding eight-week schedule, meeting all specifications precisely and on time.

Electro-Wind Limited was approached by Devontech to collaborate on the design, build and obtain approval for a range of PSP transformers for the Feltham and Wokingham projects.

For over 35 years Electro-Wind has been designing and manufacturing single and three phase transformer products for customers in the UK, Europe, and Global Markets, having a well-established reputation as one of the UK’s leading specialists we have fulfilled many contracts for companies such as Alstom, Tata, Corus, Mitsibishi and Toyota. Electro-Wind, Devontech and Atkins global have been working on the project which covers some 80 miles of railway and 500 pieces of outdated signalling equipment, which is being replaced as part of Network Rail’s commitment to transforming the UK’s entire network through the deployment of digital signalling and train control technology, transforming signalling for passengers, business, and freight operators. The new signalling equipment which uses digital technologies will bring a number of benefits such as increased capacity for trains on the network, fewer delays, enhanced safety, and lower costs. To date Electro-Wind has manufactured 57 transformers for this project ranging from 5kva up to 60kva. The Transformers have been 400v/650v signalling transformers that Devontech and Electro-Wind have worked closely together to get PADS approval for the Network rail Infrastructure. The project started in December 2015 and is due for completion in March 2023, there have been five phases to this project which is currently running on schedule and to the planned time frame, with final commissioning for the project into service in April 2024. Electro-Wind Limited has over 35 years of experience in transformer repair and manufacture. Yesterday members of the team received technical engineering guidance from our co-founder Harold Stanley, who after 20 years returned to Electro-Wind Limited to assist in technical engineering training and the development of our staff, boosting the training capacity and supporting our plan for growth.

A workplace defibrillator can raise the profile of the company and it demonstrates the employer is taking steps to protect employees. Established in 1979 Electro-Wind have been designing and manufacturing single and three phase transformer products for customers in the UK, Europe, and Global Markets over the past 40 years. As a second-generation family owned and operated company, over the past couple of years Electro-Wind has seen exponential growth, both standard and custom-built products have proved to be in demand. Material shortages in the general marketplace has boosted their UK manufacturing base. With a strong commitment and continuous passion for the businesses’ success, Electro-Wind have expanded their manufacturing premises to be based over the two sites. Investment in stock has proved not only to ensure continuity of production but enables prices to be kept as consistent as possible. With an ongoing recruitment campaign in place, Electro-Wind’s director Rachel Stanley-Cooper commented “We are continually looking for candidates that are passionate and committed to working in an established company with forward thinking values to sustain our growth and for succession planning and promotion.” With a very low staff turnover, many of the long-established team members have worked for the company for over the 20 years, however the business has expanded dramatically over the past few years with the addition of many new recruits.

Jeff Roberts has most recently joined the sales team. With a strong background in the electrical distribution and wholesale markets he has had many years direct experience within the electrical industry.

 

Justyna Rokita originally from Zabrze, Poland moved to England 18 years ago

Justyna has many years of experience in electrical assembly work and currently works winding small to medium sized coils.

 

Jack Colclough attended engineering courses at College and a Mechanical Work placement before joining Electro-Wind in the winding department

 

Alister Holmes joined the assembly department as a core builder, Alister’s considerable experience came from working in Bespoke Lighting for several years

 

Matt Gould has an electrical background as a qualified Electrician prior to joining Electro-wind as a builder and finisher

 

Chris Ball worked in the construction industry whilst working on an engineering qualification before joining the winding department

 

 

Demand for custom built, British made products seems to be higher than ever and the drive to sustain growth and invest in staff is an ongoing priority for Electro-Wind.

Electro-Wind are pleased to announce their full compliance to UL standards for isolation Transformers, Auto Transformer and Inductors, after a successful week of testing our transformers and inductors had been through exhaustive tests in order to meet the high standards set out by UL.

Our class H insulation system conforms to the highest standards to meet and satisfy the reliability requirements of UL.

Electro-Wind are now able to manufacture bespoke 100va to 60kva single phase and 300va to 100kva three phase transformers with any voltage up to and including 600v.

We are also approved to manufacture Auto Transformers and inductors. Single Phase and Three Phase version also available.
